Closing the Haifa Chemicals Ammonia Reservoir

The Amonia reservoir in the Haifa Portaining 12,000 tons of ammonia, a highly fatally toxic gas, was in use for over 30 years, endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents of the north. Following the Second Lebanon War, during which it became a declared target for Hezbollah missiles, Zalul demanded its immediate closure and a halt to dangerous ammonia import by sea. Thanks to the six-year campaign by Zalul, with assistance of other NGOs and activists, the reservoir has been emptied and closed and the ammonia threat has been eliminated. As a result, the fertilizer plant also closed, resulting in a 46% decrease in polluting substances discharged into the Kishon Stream.
